For a while now we have been hinting about a project that we are working on here at GBZ called SeattleVersus. Well here is a sneak peek at what we are working on. SV will be an informative , community driven site, dedicated to news and video game events in the Seattle area. Kind of a one-stop shop where you can chat with fellow gamers and share everything from gamertags, to playing in casual or competitive tournaments. This site will not just be about GBZ, but we plan on providing information on just about every gaming event going on in your area. So whether you play First Person Shooters, Fighting Games, Strategy Games, as long as it is on a console or PC our goal is to promote events, grow , and strengthen the gaming community here in Seattle. SeattleVersus.com is coming soon and will be live on January 22nd. With that said there is a long awaited announcement that has long been overdue as it pertains to the EOS Lan Party. In celebration of the launch of this new site we are planning a major event taking place on September 28-30 called simply SV I (SeattleVersus 1). SV1 will be our annual event that will be taking the place of our End of Summer Lan that we usually have each year at Gamebreakerz. SV I will be held in the Lake Washington Ballroom at the Bellevue Red Lion located at 11211 Main Street. Here’s what you can expect from this 3 day event. Planned Game Lineup -Subject to change League of Legends 5v5 Tournament Dota 2 5v5 Tournament (Release Pending) Counter-Strike Global Offensive 5v5 Tournament (Release Pending) Starcraft 2 1v1 Tournament Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition Tournament Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 Tournament King of Fighters XIII Tournament SoulCaliber V Tournament Street Fighter x Tekken Tournament In addition to the gaming there will be Prizes, Prizes, Prizes and more Prizes to be given away from some of the biggest names in the business. Unlike previous years raffle tickes will be made available to the participants and spectators and extra tickets can be purchased with proceeds raised from the raffle going to benifit charity. For those of you who can not make it to SV I there will be live streaming of the event broadcast for each day. We are almost 4 months into finalizing the planning of this event so hopefully it was well worth the delay. We will provide more news as we finalize all of the details so in the meantime keep your skills sharp and find some teammates because there is work to be done.

Although it doesn’t have a set release date yet, DotA 2 is fairly far along in its development. Valve’s full-fledged sequel to the popular WarCraft III mod is well into its Beta phase, and although a number of characters are still absent, it’s safe to say that the majority of the framework is in place. DotA 2 is by no means an easy game to learn, and Valve is very aware of this fact. They have promised to include a coaching system for new players, but it hasn’t been implemented yet. What has been implemented, however, is an incredibly simple way to observe games. Just go to the “Watch” tab, find a game, and that’s it. If you see a friend in a game, just right-click on their name to jump in and watch them go at it. This isn’t the first time that spectating has been included in a competitive title (FPS games have been doing it for ages), but it is suspiciously absent from a number of big-name titles (i.e. StarCraft II). The ability to jump in and observe just about any game seems like a logical addition to any competitive multiplayer title, but nowhere is it more accessible than in DotA 2. But what about the actual gameplay? Rest assured DotA fans, you’ll feel right at home. Aside from the additions to item management, this is the game that has been known and loved for years. I can’t say whether or not there have been any balance changes beyond the current version of DotA, however once all of the characters are added and the game moves closer to release, then we can start picking things apart and discussing balance. Until then, it’s enough to see beloved heroes reborn in a fresh new art style with new unique attack animations. The addition of voice chat is probably one of the biggest game-changers in DotA 2. Competitive teams have been using third party software to provide this feature since the beginning, but integrating a reliable push-to-talk feature into the game itself is a boon for neophytes and casual players. It’s intimidating to potentially have to answer for your mistakes and listen to people criticize you, but the potential for coordinating strategies and discussing tactics far outweighs any possible negatives. It’s possible that the voice chat could devolve into an easy way for players to insult one another without having to take their hands off their mice, but we won’t have to worry about that for some time. As someone who isn’t a DotA die hard, it’s hard to say much more besides the fact that DotA 2 plays like the game it always deserved to be. Coming into its own with years of refinement already under its belt means that it will be ready to entice new players without so much as a hiccup when release day arrives. The game maintains the same methodical pace, but the added smoothness of the gameplay and controls helps to keep the game...

It’s hard to believe that to this day that what started 12 years ago as a mod known simply as Counter-Strike, has grown into one of the the top first-person shooters of all time surpassing over 25 million units last year. But ask the legions of fans world-wide and they will tell you that as simplistic as it is, Counter-Strike is like a fine wine only that only gets better with age. Last year Valve set the gaming world on fire by announcing that they would be releasing the next installment in the series: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. While this game is not meant to be a reinvention of the wheel, Valve seems to be intent on giving CS some important tweaks to take something great and make it even better. CSGO uses relatively small maps featuring 5v5 gameplay. In addition Valve has included a built in ELO-based ranking system to determine your skill level so if your reflexes are slowing down (like me) then you will hopefully be placed in games with people of your own skill level (bots). There is the ability to have custom gameplay options on the PC version of the game to increase the team sizes, however console players will not have that option. Confirmed maps so far are Dust, Dust 2, Aztec, Office, Nuke, Italy, and Inferno. The best news is that the core gameplay looks just as appealing as it did many years ago and with the new additions of items such as the Molotov cocktail and updated art style CSGO looks like it is going to hold its own against today’s first person shooter games. CSGO is slated for release on PC, XBOX 360, & Playstation game consoles in early 2012.
